Fancy Coffee Explained

Jan 09 2012 Published by under Articles

Preparing a cup of coffee certainly seems like one of the easiest things in the world.  Simple machines can usually deliver your morning jo in a number of minutes. But, it still seems like people keep trying to find more and more complicated ways to prepare their favorite drink and, unfortunately, all of these difficult and fancy coffees can quickly get confusing.

There’s no denying the fact that, aside from water, coffee is the most popular drink in the world. Complicated coffee drinks like lattes and cappuccinos are found in fast food restaurants and coffee shops alike. There is no wonder that people get attached to these drinks and want to make them in their own home. But, the drinks often sound so complicated that one can’t possibly imagine ever actually mixing up a skinny mocha latte cap-icano in their own home, right?

Well, let me tell you a little bit of a secret from inside the coffee industry – no matter how fancy a coffee drink looks, there really isn’t any variety of coffee that is too difficult to prepare. Let me tell you a little bit about what some of your favorite coffee drinks really are. A lot of people order fancy drinks all the time and have no idea what they are actually made of.

Espresso

EsspressoLet’s start off with the most basic drink besides coffee itself. Espresso is a condensed drink that is prepared by flash steaming water and using intense pressure to push it through finely ground coffee beans. The water goes through the beans when it is superheated and under great pressure. This process causes a great deal of flavor and strength to get into your drink. It also causes a good number of particulates to get into your drink as well.

Espresso is usually drank by people who are looking for a jolt or burst of energy because of its high caffeine content. However, it is interesting that espresso is usually drank in small doses. Because it is drank in small doses, a shot of espresso contains just about the same amount of caffeine as a mug of coffee. But, if you’re looking for a quick ‘pick-me-up’ and don’t want to down an entire mug of jo, then a shot of espresso is a great alternative. You can take some of the edge off by adding sugar to sweeten the taste.

Cappuccino

CappuccinoCappuccino is loved by millions of people all around the world, few of whom actually understand what it is. The cappuccino that you find at fast food restaurants or in highway gas stations is actually nothing like a real cappuccino. Most of the time, these chinos are sweet concoctions which are nothing more than flavor power mixed with hot water and tons of sugar. The sugar content is probably the reason why these drinks are so popular – but they usually have no coffee in them at all.

A real cappuccino is made with espresso, milk and frothed milk. Frothed milk is milk that has been injected with steam. The milk is quickly heated and a thick layer of foam forms on the top. A barista (coffee bartender) will first froth milk to the desired temperature and foam before adding a shot or two of espresso depending on the size of the cappuccino. They will then add extra hot milk to flavor the cappuccino. Sometimes, a customer will ask a barista to add sugar but they will sometimes leave that up to the customer. A cappuccino is sometimes served with chocolate sprinkles or spices on top of the foam.

Latte

A lot a is very close to a cappuccino – except with the omission of frothed milk. Instead, a latte is a mixture of espresso and steamed milk. The steamed milk does not have a layer of thick foam, rather it is just very warm and has a very, very thin layer of foam.

There are two different kinds of latte. The first is a café latte, which is created when the steamed milk is added to the espresso. The second kind is a latte macchiato, which is created when espresso is added to micro-frothed milk. A café latte has a stronger coffee flavor while the latte macchiato has a more creamy flavor.

Americano

AmericanoThere isn’t anything too fancy about an Americano. In fact, most of the coffee that is drank throughout the country, and possibly throughout the world, could be considered Americano. It is simply a normal cup of coffee served with milk on the side. Yes, it might sound surprising to hear that this is not a complicated drink. Ignore the fact that it has a fancy name.

So from now on, hopefully you will not be intimidated by all of the fancy coffee names. There really isn’t too much variation in the ingredients used in these drinks. The basics are just coffee beans and milk. The difference in taste comes with how the ingredients are prepared and mixed.

If you want to start making fancy coffee drinks in your own home, you really just need to get a coffee bean grinder and an espresso machine. Most espresso machines will include a milk frother on the side. This will help you create steamed milk for some of the more fancy drinks.

Manual Drip Coffee Makers – What Are They?

Nov 16 2011 Published by under Articles

Manual Drip Coffee MakerYa know, I’m constantly surprised by the fact that many people don’t even understand that there is a difference between a manual drip coffee maker and an automatic drip coffee maker. In fact, there are a lot of people that don’t even know that manual drip coffee makers even exist. So, in light of this, I’m going to grind into this topic.

The difference between the two is very simple. With an automatic drip, the machine does most of the work – pouring the hot water over your coffee grounds. With a manual drip coffee maker, you do that part yourself without the help of an electric machine.

So, that’s probably why you don’t really hear about manual drip coffee maker machines. There aren’t really ‘machines’, it’s really just a different way of making coffee. You can find manual drip coffee makers in a variety of different sizes, but it’s pretty common to find them in ten to 12 cup varieties. It’s also pretty common to see single cup manual drip coffee makers as well.

Pouring the water over the coffee grounds yourself gives you the ability to choose from a large number of different filters. Some filters are made of special papers to add extra taste. Others are made of special materials so they add no taste at all (or at least, that’s the aim).

The great thing about manual drip coffee makers is that they can be used anywhere that you go because they don’t use electricity. This makes them a really good choice for campers or people that are traveling. When you are camping, you can simply boil the water with a portable stove or even over your campfire.

What Exactly Is A Manual Drip Coffee Maker?

There really isn’t all that much to a manual drip coffee maker. It’s really just a pot or a cup, the filter and the filter holder. The filter must be held on top of the cup or pot so it doesn’t fall off and spill grounds all over the place. Yes, there are a few companies that make more complicated varieties, but there’s really no need to get anything more complex than the three pieces that I just mentioned.

The process of making coffee with a manual drip coffee maker is very simple. All you need to do is set the filter on the pot or cup, fill it with coffee grounds, then pour on some very hot or boiling water. Just be careful with that hot water, since there is a chance that you could be scolded.

The filter of a manual drip coffee maker could be made of a temporary material or a permanent material. A common material for a temporary filter is, obviously enough, paper. Even though paper is cheap to purchase, it may end up costing you more money in the long run since you will be buying filters over and over again. A better idea may be to purchase a metal filer or one made out of another permanent material. Not only will they last for years, but they provide you with a consistent taste because the water will flow through the filter in the same way every time.

Thinking of Purchasing a Manual Drip Coffee Maker?

If you are thinking about purchasing a manual drip coffee maker, consider if it is the best choice for you. Are you will to go through all that work because the end results might taste better? If you answered yes to that, then you might want to check out a French Press instead. A French Press is another way to make coffee manually – and the taste is far superior to a manual drip coffee maker.

We have a number of French Press reviews to help you decide which press will fit your needs the best. Make sure that you have a good understanding of a few different products before you decide which press is the best. Or, if your heart is set on using a manual drip coffee maker, here are a few worth checking out.

Best Cheap Coffee Machine – Our Recommendations

Nov 10 2011 Published by under Articles

We all have to spend money on way too many things. Coffee should definitely not be one of the biggest financial burdens on our wallet. So, what’s the best cheap coffee machine? Well, there are so many different coffee machines out on the market today, it can get pretty confusing. Here are three coffee machines that are incredibly cheap but are high quality enough to give you a good cup of coffee every morning.

Best Cheap Coffee Machine – Our Recommendations

Best cheap coffee machineHamilton-Proctor 43501Y 12 Cup Coffeemaker
Less than $20

This might be the absolute best cheap coffee machine because it is sturdy, makes 12 cups of coffee at one time and costs less than $20. It really gives you just about everything that you need to get your coffee ready in the morning in about 5 minutes or less. However, this coffee machine does have one feature that many other cheap coffee machines don’t – if you pull out the pot before the coffee is done brewing, it has an automatic pause feature. This will ensure that coffee doesn’t go spilling all over your counter if you accidentally pull the pot out before your coffee is ready.

Besides that, this has all of the features that you would expect to find on the best cheap coffee machine. It has a hot plate, an on/off button and a 12 glass carafe. Of course, if you’re looking for a cheap coffee maker, you probably aren’t expecting any bells and whistles. Luckily for you, you won’t get any with this Hamilton-Proctor. It’s just the basics.

Best Cheap Coffee Machine

Bodum Brazil 1-Liter 34-Ounce French Press Coffeemaker
Less than $20

It might surprise you that one device on our ‘best cheap coffee machine’ list is not even an automatic drip coffee maker. Instead, it is a device called a French Press. A French Press is a different way of making coffee – you mix hot water and coffee grounds together and let them brew for about 4 minutes. Then, you use an attachment called a plunger to push all of the coffee grounds down to the bottom of the press and pour the coffee out of the top. Believe me, it’s much more simple than it sounds and many people absolutely adore the taste of French pressed coffee.

If you have heard of a French Press before, you might not expect to see one in an article about the best cheap coffee machine. But, the Bodum Brazil makes plenty of coffee for one person and still cost less than 20 bucks! So, if you have been putting off trying out a French Press because you think it might get expensive, let the Bodum Brazil prove the wrong. It will give you a superior cup of coffee in just a few minutes – and the price definitely rivals cheap automatic drip machines.

Black & Decker DCM600W 5-Cup Drip Coffeemaker
Less than $20

Best cheap coffee machineYes, it might not surprise you that Black & Decker have a product that could be considered the best cheap coffee machine. The company is known for producing products that are just the nuts and bolts. They use designs that are simple enough to be cheap, but they also use materials that make their products last. This 5 cup automatic drip coffee maker will get the job done, and that’s just about it.

Keep in mind, however, that one of the reasons that it is less expensive than many other models is because it has a smaller carafe. It will make 5 cups of your favorite coffee at once. That’s about enough for two people that are moderate coffee drinkers. So, if you want your coffee machine to make a little bit more, this might not be the best cheap coffee machine for you.

Good Luck Finding The Best Cheap Coffee Machine

I certainly hope that this quick article about the best cheap coffee machine has helped you in your shopping search. Remember, you don’t always have to sacrifice quality in order to get something at a cheap price. This is very true when you talk about Bodum French Press devices – they give you a superior taste at a competitive cost. It is definitely worth taking a look a couple of our French Press reviews.

Coffee Pod Maker Machine – An Overview

Nov 10 2011 Published by under Articles

Coffee Pod Maker MachineSo, we all drink coffee in order to stay awake of and get everything done throughout the day, right? But, the question that plagues many coffee drinkers is this – how can you get more things done if you’re sitting around waiting for your coffee to brew. Yes, you could go to some coffee shop and spend a fortune for a 5 oz cup at Starbucks, but that’s a waste of money and you want your coffee to be brewed at home.

Many people have found the answer to be a coffee pod maker machine. With a device like this, you can make coffee in about 30 seconds. A coffee pod maker machine means no more waiting around for your coffee to brew in the morning. If you forget to turn on the coffee pot when you wake up, it’s no problem. You can just use your coffee pod machine moments before you walk out the door and go on your way to work.

What Is A Coffee Pod Maker Machine?

A coffee pod maker machine is a simple device. Millions of them have been sold in the United States and around the world because they are simple to use and quite convenient. The device looks a lot like a regular coffee maker. To use it, you fill up the back of water, but instead of putting in coffee grounds, you place a coffee pod into the receptacle.

The coffee pod maker machine uses a special spraying method to push hot water over the coffee pod to create the drink. It will monitor the amount of water that it’s using so the ratio of coffee to water will create the perfect cup.

Coffee pod maker machineThe coffee pod itself will usually look like a circular tea bag. They come in a variety of strengths and flavors and require no work on your part. By that, I mean that you never have to grind up beans or do any measuring! They are pre-measured for a certain number of cups. Most of the time, the number of cups will be determined by the type of coffee pod maker machine that you have. Oftentimes, these are made for single cups. But, you may see some that fill up an entire pot from time to time.

Is It Expensive To Use A Coffee Pod Maker Machine?

Many people believe that using a coffee pod maker machine is expensive, but that’s not completely true. In most places you can buy a package of 72 individual coffee pods for less than twenty bucks. Yes, it is more expensive than using a regular coffee maker. But really you are paying for the convenience, speed and superior taste.

Coffee Pod Maker MachineKeep in mind that a coffee pod maker machine also creates absolutely no mess, requires no measuring and cleanup is a snap. Not to mention the fact that your coffee will be ready in about 30 seconds. For some serious coffee drinkers, spending a little bit extra money for benefits like this is really worth it.

Is A Coffee Pod Maker Machine Really Mess Free?

When you’re finished grilling coffee with a regular automatic drip coffee maker, you have to pull out the coffee grounds that are completely soaked in hot water. Most of the time the coffee grounds will drip all over the floor as you move them to the trash can. But, when you use a coffee pod maker machine, all of the grounds are contained inside of the pod. You don’t have to open up the pod to use it. So, when your coffee is done you can just throw away the pod in one piece.

Depending on the model of coffee pod maker machine that you purchase, the receptacle that holds the pod will probably be dishwasher safe as well.

Should I Stir My French Press Before Pressing?

Oct 31 2011 Published by under Articles

Coffee Being PressedLately, there has been some confusion among French Press users concerning a specific step in the preparation process. It seems like some users are a bit confused as to whether they should stir up the coffee and water mixture in their French Press before they push down the plunger.

So, What is the Definite Answer? Should You Stir the French Press Contents?

Well, the point of a French Press is to extract the maximum amount of flavor, aroma and oils from every bit of coffee bean. Even though the ground up coffee beans and water are mixed together, stirring helps to extract even more of these essential characteristics. So, after you have put hot water into your coffee press, shake in the necessary amount of coffee grounds and then give it a quick stir.

It is also important to note that many French Press enthusiasts would rather use a wooden spoon than a metal spoon. The reason for this is twofold. First of all, using a normal metal teaspoon would be difficult because they are usually not long enough to reach to the bottom of the press. A wooden spoon is usually made for serving and stirring, so it will be much longer.

The second reason is that a metal spoon can sometimes give the coffee an unpleasant taste. This could be because there is still residue left on the spoon from washing or just because the metal mixing with the water produces some kind of reaction. No matter what the reason is, I would personally recommend that you use a wooden stirring spoon to stir up this mixture.

Remember, also, to allow this mixture to sit for a few minutes before you actually press the coffee. Some people will tell you that you can mix the coffee grounds and water together and stir them right away. Then, you should leave them sitting for about a minute before stirring them a final time and allowing them to set for an additional 3 minutes. This is the method of preparation that I would recommend.

If you have never used a French Press, then you might want to take a look at some of our in-depth and original French Press reviews to help you decide which product would be the best for you.

Can You Use Pre-Ground Coffee In A French Press?

Oct 31 2011 Published by under Articles

Pre-Grond CoffeeTons of people are wondering what the answer to this question really is – can you use store bought pre-ground coffee in a French Press? A French Press is, without a doubt, one of the best ways to make an excellent cup of coffee. So, is this process compatible with coffee beans that you buy from a store that have already been ground?

In short, yes it is possible to create French pressed coffee using coffee beans that were sold pre-ground. The process will work just about the same, but there will be a few drawbacks.

First of all, most of the coffee that has already been ground up and packaged is meant for use in an automatic drip coffee maker. These auto drip coffeemakers use a paper filter that uses a much finer grind than anything that you would want to use with a French Press. This is because the paper filter does not allow any grounds to get through, while a French Press uses a mesh filter that requires rather coarse grounds so none of them end up on top of the filter and make their way into your cup of coffee. So, the first drawback is that you might end up with lots of solids and particles in your cup if you use pre-ground coffee with your French Press.

But, the drawbacks don’t stop there. Since a French Press is usually considered one of the better ways to prepare a cup of coffee, it just doesn’t sit well with many French Press users to use pre-ground coffee since the freshness of the grounds can begin to deteriorate within just 20 minutes of grinding. Yes, the packages that you buy at stores are specially built to allow just the right amount of air to circulate through the grounds and keep them fresh for a much longer period than that – but, there is no denying that pre-ground coffee that has been sitting on a store shelf is less fresh than moments after it went through the grinder. The taste, aroma and fereshness deteriorate after grinding.

What about stores that have a grinder right in the coffee aisle?

Some stores have a large supply of whole bean coffee that you can put into a grinder and grind to the consistency of your choice. But, the problem here is that those whole beans may have been sitting in their containers for a number of weeks or even months. The dispensers that they sit in are not constructed for long-term storage but, unfortunately, these beans may sit in these dispensers for a long period of time.

What is the alternative?

Most French Press users will tell you that grinding your own beans in your home is the only way to go. Instead of buying pre-ground packages of coffee, think about buying whole bean coffee and then grinding it in your kitchen. The cost is just about the same or sometimes even less. You can purchase a coffee grinder at a great price in most department stores. Or, you can even shop online and take out the hassle of driving around looking for a good price.

All you really need to do is buy whole bean coffee from the store. Even if a package of whole bean coffee has been sitting on the store shelf for as long as a package of pre-ground coffee, since it has not already been ground up, the aromas and flavors are still sitting in the bean. After you buy the beans, just take them home and leave them in a cool dry place until you are ready to grind them up and make your morning coffee with them.

Freshly ground beans are really the only way to go when you are a French Press user. Since you have already made the investment and bought your French Press, you might as well go all the way and start grinding your own beans. It is not very difficult to do, and we have setup an easy to understand guide to get the perfect coffee grind. So, even if you have never ground up your own coffee beans before, just read over our article and you will be an expert in no time.

5 Steps to the Perfect Cup of French Press Coffee

Oct 27 2011 Published by under Articles

Bodum Brazil French PressAlright folks, let’s face it – making French Pressed coffee can be pretty intimidating to people who aren’t familiar with it. I remember the first time that I saw a French Press, I wasn’t sure exactly what it was. I guess I was still stuck in the ‘Auto-Drip Mode’ that I grew up with.

In light of that confusion, I found a great article that outlines the most important steps in making a great cup of coffee using a french press. Thanks to Tim for allowing me to use it here…

5 Steps to the Perfect Cup of French Press Coffee

By Tim Kilroy

Coffee is a miraculous invention. It has spurred revolution in the early coffee shops of England. It has started countless romances (Hey, would you like to grab a cup of coffee…). It has fired up thousands of business plans, and seen the creation of millions of term papers. So you would think that after all this time, there would be a foolproof method for brewing the perfect cup of coffee.

There are favorites kinds of coffee and favorite kinds of coffee makers, and each has its own unique spin, but here is a simple guide to creating the perfect cup of coffee:

  1. French Press: Start with a coffee press, or french press coffee maker. These are readily available at Starbucks or Macy’s or at any kitchen store. They are simple contraptions, with a container or carafe to hold the coffee, a plunger to “press” coffee and a strainer to separate the grounds from the coffee. You can find them for usually under $20. The last coffee press I bought was $17. No need to break the bank here. So, the first step is to start with a french press. (And it will make you seem sophisticated when you pull out the french press after dinner…
  2. The Beans: The kind of bean doesn’t matter. I use cheap coffee from Trader Joes, usually. It does not have to be expensive or french or anything of the sort. Most coffee that comes as a whole bean is pretty good. When you have it ground, just make sure that it is coarsely ground. You don’t want your coffee too fine…the coffee will come out too strong and bitter. If you buy your coffee already ground, that will probably be OK…no optimal, however. I would rather that you get your coffee ground specifically for the french press. They do this at no charge at Starbucks and Peets Coffee. And many supermarkets have machines for grinding that have a French Press setting. So, step 2,, pick your coffee (I prefer Trader Joe’s Bay Blend…cheap and yummy) and have them ground for the French Press. Add 2 tablespoons of ground coffee for every cup of coffee you want to brew. I am never exact here…I use a measuring spoon, but always put in just a little extra with each scoop. They call it a “rounded” tablespoon.
  3. The Water: Once you have your press ready, put your beans in the bottom of the press. Now you need some hot water. Water for coffee should not be boiling hot. Ideally it is said that the perfect coffee temperature is 196-202 degrees Fahrenheit (91-94.5 degrees Celsius). I don`t have a thermometer (or the patience) to measure water temperature, so I use a pan or the microwave to bring water to the boil and then I count to 8 before I pour it into the french press. 10 seems to be too long, and 5 not long enough, so I have settled on a slow count of 8. I also use a measuring cup. My french press holds 34 ounces, so I measure out 4 cups of water (32 ounces). I bring it to the boil, count to 8, then pour it onto the grounds.
  4. Timing: This is the most critical part. If you don’t leave the grounds and the water together long enough, the coffee will be weak. Too long and it will be bitter. 4 minutes and 30 seconds is the magic amount. You can experiment with the time to get it right for you, but try 4:30 to start. It makes the coffee have a depth of flavor that is divine.
  5. The Plunge: At the 4:30 mark, slowly plunge the coffee. Don’t do it too quickly or the grounds will get forced through the strainer. Do it slowly, but firmly until the plunger reaches the bottom.

That is it…french press, appropriately ground beans, water that is an eight count off the boil, 4:30 in the pot and firmly plunged. Easy and truly delicious.

Automatic Espresso Machines – What Are They All About?

Oct 15 2011 Published by under Articles

EsspressoAutomatic espresso coffee makers are pretty expensive when you compare them to most other types of coffee makers. They tend to be looked at as a kind of prestigious coffee machine that is aimed toward someone who knows specifically what they want. There are several different kinds of espresso machines and they come in semi-automatic, fully automatic and super automatic models.  Yes, it sounds like ‘Super Automatic’ is a term that I just made up, but I assure, that is what they’re really called.

Semi-automatic Espresso Coffee Makers

Obviously, the difference between all of these different models lies in the amount of automation involved. Semi-automatic espresso machines are incredibly popular and they are probably what you think of when you picture an espresso machine in your head. They use an electric pump which makes very consistently rich and evenly tasting espresso. All that the user needs to do is to put coffee and water into the machine and pull the electric pump to turn it on. This process is actually a lot like an automatic drip coffee maker.

Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine

Fully Automatic Espresso Machine

What does a semi-automatic espresso machine do automatically? These machines automate the process a pretty good amount. They will tamp down all of the coffee grounds to the appropriate level, then automatically brew the coffee with the water that you put in. Next, they will automatically fill up your coffee or espresso cup and finally eject all of the used grounds so that you don’t have to handle them directly.

Because of this level of automation, these machines can get relatively expensive. However, if you run a commercial coffee business or you are a huge coffee and espresso enthusiast, you should be able to purchase one for less than $500. Perhaps you can even get a better deal if you shop online or purchase a used machine.

Fully Automatic Espresso Coffee Machines

Fully Automatic Espresso Machine

Fully Automatic Espresso Machine

If you want to make some really great tasting espresso or cappuccino without much work at all, then a fully automatic espresso coffee maker might be the right choice for you. All you really need to do with one of these machines is keep it stocked with coffee beans and then press a button. The fully automatic machine will grind the coffee beans to the appropriate consistency needed, then it will fill the brewing chamber with water from an attached a water line. The next thing that it does automatically is to tamp down the coffee grounds and brew the coffee before filling up your coffee or espresso cup and ejecting the used grounds.

Many commercial ventures enjoy using a fully automatic espresso machine because they actually connect directly to the water system in your home or business. That means that you don’t have to measure out any amount of water before you actually make the espresso. The machine is already hooked up to the waterline so it does that part automatically. However, this level of automation comes with a hefty price tag and you should expect to spend at least $1000 and anywhere up to $5000 to get a machine that works like this.

Super Automatic Espresso Coffee Machines

Super Automatic Espresso Machine

Super Automatic Espresso Machine

The main difference between a fully automatic and a super automatic espresso machine is the fact that a super automatic machine can make a number of different specialty drinks. You just need to keep this type of machine stocked up with coffee beans and then select the the type of drink that you want it to prepare. It can create espresso, lattes, cappuccinos and just about any other kind of coffee drink that you can imagine.

These machines will automatically grind the coffee then fill up the brewing chamber just like a fully automatic machine. It will then tamp down the coffee grounds and brew those coffee grounds before filling up your cup and automatically ejecting all of the used grounds directly into a trash can that can be pulled out when it is full.

Usually, these types of machines will include a system to automatically froth milk so you can create some great tasting cappuccinos without any extra work it all. The only thing that you really need to do is keep it stocked with materials like coffee beans, syrups and milk. Then, you can just press a button and select the drink that you want from a menu. Because of all of the special features, you should expect to spend a little bit more on a super automatic espresso coffee machine. Don’t be surprised if you have trouble finding one of these machines for less than $1000. Larger commercial models can cost all the way up to $5,000 or more

While these types of machines are good for commercial use, if you’re just an individual or a person with a small family that doesn’t need to make a whole lot of coffee at once, you should think about using a smaller coffee maker like a French Press. You can create some really rich and bold tasting coffee in just a few minutes with a device like this.

How Coffee Has Changed – The Coffee Craze

Oct 14 2011 Published by under Articles

An Exotic Spiced Cup of Coffee

An Exotic Spiced Cup of Coffee

The coffee that we have today is not the same as the coffee that they had in years past. We don’t see too many people brewing up plain coffee these days. Most of our coffee has added flavors or has been grown in a special way to make it taste better. These days, it’s very easy to get your hands on gourmet coffee that has been grown at high altitudes and sheared from Arabica coffea plants for the highest quality taste.

Coffee has become such a social standard that we see it all over the place – in libraries, shopping centers, coffeehouses and just about everywhere else that you can imagine. We have all seen the Starbucks counters lining major social areas like shopping malls and even grocery stores. In many places, it is becoming less common to visit a coffee shop to get a regular cup of coffee.

Why is this happening? It seems that coffee is becoming an obsession all over the United States. What prize is so desired by the obsessed? Gourmet and specialty coffee. You can visit specialty stores or even order interesting flavored coffee from catalogs or off of the internet. People love grinding beans themselves and also enjoy bringing back exotic flavored beans from exotic places when they are on vacation. “Coffee tasting” events are actually becoming more common than wine tastings.

How Has It Changed?

People are coming up with all kinds of ways to improve the flavor and aroma of coffee and this trend shows no signs of stopping or even slowing down. Since coffee had its beginnings as a stimulant in 900 AD, people have been constantly thinking of ways to improve upon it. But in the last few years, with the incredible coffee craze, the drink has never changed as rapidly as it is now.

One of the major changes is the amount of caffeine that is now in the average cup coffee. Since so many people are constantly trying to reduce their intake of caffeine for health reasons, coffee producers around the world are trying to find ways to reduce the amount of caffeine in their beans. Decaffeinated coffee is becoming more and more popular than it ever has been before and manufacturers of these drinks are trying to find ways to replace the flavor lost to the decreased caffiene presence. They are actually becoming quite successful and many people are very satisfied with the decaf coffee that they sample.

So, now more than ever, it is much easier to become a coffee expert. All you need to do is visit the local grocery store or just walk down the street to the closest commercial coffee shop and grab a cup of your favorite drink. There are tons of different coffee drinks to sample from and the list of flavors is ever-growing.
